Random House Considering Google Partnership

Random House is pondering the idea of joining Google’s publishing partner program, which means Random House’s books will be searchable through Google Book Search. Random House had a lawsuit against Google in 2005, trying to stop scanning of copyrighted material without explicit consent from the publisher. So why would they now consider this partnership?

Competition for iTunes?

According to Business Week, it looks like Universal Music and other major music groups feel they can pull together their alliances to create their own music store to compete with iTunes or take over music sales. Doug Morris, Universal Music chief, has been busy building alliances with BMG Music and still reasoning with Warner Music Group. If all three of them pull together they may be able to control 75% of music sold in the U.S. Their plan is to build upon Microsoft’s Zune media player, Sony’s PlayStation, and wireless carriers and call the service “Total Music”.

He will be overseeing all of SideStep’s search, international search included. Heist comes to SideStep with plenty of knowledge and experience that may lead to bigger and better things for this Travel Search Engine.

Wikipedia Moves to California

The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to move from St. Petersburg, Florida to San Francisco, California. Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit charitable organizaton that prides itself in offering the world free to the public, multilingual information through their multiple projects created. It is supported mostly by small donations provided by private individuals and it operates mainly through volunteer staff. Wikimedia Foundation’s last day in St. Petersburg is officially scheduled for January 31, 2008.

Wikipedia was started in January 2001 by the founder Jimmy Wales and since then expanded into the Wikimedia Foundation in 2003. Wikimedia’s projects have become a successful, continuously developing, and widely used resource all over the world.
