There’s No Stopping the Torrents

uTorrent, which isn’t currently available for Mac, is a small but powerful torrent client that seems most popular amongst more tech-savvy users and Europeans. Limewire continues to be the most popular client, but is quickly losing popularity and has gained a reputation as being the more amateur of the torrent clients.

Niche Dating Sites Outperforming Mainstream Ones

Smaller dating sites that target a specific group or interest are growing in membership as larger “one size fits all” sites decline.

Sites catering to specific religions, ethnicities, and sexual orientation are growing at extremely high rates. According to information from Hitwise, in March, the Top 3 gay sites on the web increased their US share of site visits by 54% over the year before. Religious sites increased their traffic by 69%, while the top five mainstream sites lost 7% of their hits over the same period.

Russian Authorities Demand Registration of Wi-Fi Devices

russia.jpgRussia is demanding that users of wireless devices that are hooked up to WiFi register and wait ten days or more before using laptops, PDAs, and smartphones or risk having them confiscated by the government. And that’s just the beginning. There is an even more bureaucratic red tape to cut before actually setting up a wireless network in your own home or business.

Imagine if every time you installed a router in your house, you had to go through a process of approval through your government that could weeks. You need to submit copious documentation, receive a license, and in certain urban areas like Moscow and St. Petersburg, receive special permission from the Russian Federal Security Service.

Hacker News Users Vote to Ban Valleywag

Michael Arrington at Techcrunch is reporting that tabloid blog Valleywag, which is sort like TMZ for geeks, has been banned from low-fi news aggregator Hacker News after a 60-40 vote to get rid of them.

Valleywag, which is a Gawker Media enterprise run by everybody’s favorite blog entrepreneur Nick Denton, treats the tech community much like TMZ treats Hollywood. The sex lives of and personal blunders of high profile tech celebrities are brought to the fore in a barrage of often mean-spirited gossip.
