Facebook To Announce Privacy And Safety Initiatives
Facebook is going to announce agreements with the attorneys general of 49 states (don’t mess with Texas) regarding protecting young people from Internet predators.
Facebook is calling it the “Key Principles Of Social Networking Safety,” and it will focus on cooperating with law enforcement, introducing technology to protect children, and providing additional safety measures for all the teeming masses on Facebook.
Some of the initiatives agreed to by Facebook include eliminating links to porn sites, restricting searches by adults of members under 18, weeding out sex offenders, and restricting advertisements for adult products, like booze and cigarettes, to members who are of age.
MySpace made a similar agreement inJanuary, so it’s somewhat essential for Facebook to get on board before the authorities started breathing down their necks. Besides, Facebook’s press on sexual predators hasn’t been too bad, and best to get on top of it before something terrible happens.
However, something else terrible may be happening to Facebook. An informal poll on Mashable today revealed that people are getting sick of Facebook. Whispers are emerging that Facebook is the new MySpace (well, MySpace is still successful), and some users are reporting they are getting tired of the service. Admittedly, these polls don’t exactly lure in the positive reactions of people, but the comments associated with the poll reveal some frustration and boredom with Facebook, its apps, and social networking in general.
Time will tell, but if I were Mark Zuckerberg, I’d be tempted to say, “You know, one billion dollars is more money than any human should ever need. I’m out. If it gets bigger, great, I’ll be in Tahiti chilling out, filthy rich, while I’m still young.” But perhaps Zuckerberg’s work ethic and urge to succeed are strong, and he’ll continue to lead Facebook onward and upward.
Thanks to Erick Schonfeld of Techcrunch and Adam Ostrow of Mashable for the info.
