OpenSocial Update: Hello, MySpace

OpenSocial’s big push continued today with the announcement of new partners MySpace, Bebo, and Six Apart.

The biggest name here is obviously MySpace, who recently announced their own development platform, but announced today that their new platform will be completely focused on OpenSocial.

What now for Facebook? With every other major social network signing on with Google and OpenSocial, will Facebook simply have to follow suit? Word from Facebook is that they have not been briefed on OpenSocial and Google gave out mixed messages about whether or not they have. But it did seem obvious that Google is willing to reach out and would welcome Facebook to OpenSocial.

Facebook will probably be forced to join at this point. However, this may be good news for Facebook in the long run of their new social ad network (SocialAds) is successful. The nuts and bolts of the new ad network will be revealed in New York at ad:tech on November 6th.

We’ve already discussed Facebook’s plan to use profile data for targeted ads. However, what Facebook will do is put cookies in their members’ browsers that will identify Facebook members when they visit another site. Then that other website, through SocialAds, will be able put out targeted ads to Facebook members. Pretty slick.

It is not yet known whether Microsoft (remember when Microsoft and Facebook joined up? seems like years ago) will have anything to do with this, although it makes sense to go ahead and serve the ads through Ad Center.

Lots happening right now, that’s for sure. One thing is for certain: Google comes out smelling like a rose.
