Netbooks Strike Fear Into Hearts of PC Makers

eeepc.jpgThe success of ASUS’ Eee PC has led to a massive push by come PC makers to come out with their own versions of the low-powered low-profile “netbook” computers. Now with big names Dell, HP, and Acer getting in on the netbook fad, PC manufacturers are coming to the sober realization that less is not more when it comes to the bottom line.

The margins on these small computers are so thin that it’s hard to generate a good deal of profit on them. Much of the appeal for the Eee PC wasn’t it’s small size, but its minuscule price, starting at $299.

jail-cell-729928.jpgIt’s generally good advice not to go to a Halloween party dressed as a prisoner when you’ve just put someone in the hospital while driving drunk. In fact, it’s rather ghoulish and makes Steve Irwin stingray costumes seem positively highbrow.

Joshua Lipton, a huge tool from Rhode Island, drove drunk and put an unfortunate 20 year-old woman in the hospital for weeks. Before sentencing, Lipton decided it would be funny to dress up in stripes and an orange jumpsuit for Halloween. The problem is: he posed for some pictures, and they ended up on his own Facebook page. These pictures were used in sentencing, and he got two years. Hope he kept the costume.

Go Daddy Hoses Domain Parkers

godaddy-logo.jpgThe extortion that goes on in the domain parking/buying/auctioning business is pretty ridiculous. Domain parking is something nobody really likes but is difficult to figure out fair ways of preventing. Today, Go Daddy began offering up much awaited .me domains, and the domain parkers got on their horses and started firing away.

But a funny thing happened on Go Daddy: the servers seized up and weren’t able to reject domain requests that were already taken earlier in the day. Thus the domains were sold to several people at once, and of course, all of them had their credit cards or PayPal accounts charged.
