Will iPhone and Android Usher in Golden Age in Mobile Adult Content?

iphone.jpgTime Magazine has a rather intriguing article about the future of mobile porn vis a vis the iPhone.

Several iPhone-friendly adult sites have popped up with video clips optimized for the iPhone. iPhone’s browser gives adult content companies an upper hand they’ve not previously had with other mobile carriers: restrictions by network providers.

Mobile porn is a $1.7 billion industry, but half of that income comes from Western Europe, where liberal mobile service providers allow adult content to be broadcast over their phones. With iPhone, there are no such restrictions.

Apple does restrict their applications, so adult developers aren’t likely to have much success creating adult apps for the iPhone. This is where Android steps in.

In spite of iPhone’s huge popularity, a lot of developers who got started with Android are sticking with it for a few reasons, including Android’s openness in comparison with Apple. Mobile porn app developers aren’t likely to bother with Apple, at least in the United States. Apple has resisted the distribution of adult content in podcasts, for example.

That won’t stop them from creating sites optimized for the iPhone. With the 3G network, video, the primary medium of adult content sites, can be streamed much faster and with better quality.
