Zuckerberg Interviewer Sarah Lacy Strikes Out At SXSWi
I wasn’t there, so I can’t say for sure how brutal it was, but Facebook founder/CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote address was marred by moderator Sarah Lacy’s bizzare interviewing style.
While there weren’t any particular complaints about the content of the questions asked, reports say that Lacy insinuated herself into the interview and seemed intent on establishing herself in the spectacle. She took the spotlight away from Zuckerberg while she lost the audience.
This is all rather depressing given the exuberant atomsphere prior to the interview. Sarah Lacy has done well in her short career, getting a cover story about Kevin Rose on the cover of Business Week, and getting a good sized advance for her new book.
But the bad press generated today hasn’t helped her in Techville. With audience members grumbling throughout the interview and Zuckerberg himself displaying frustration, Lacy responded on Twitter with a nice line: “seriously screw all you guys. I did my best to ask a range of questions.”
But it wasn’t the questions that seemed to get everybody annoyed. Her style was what made the interview disappointing.
It is notable that the interviewer of Mark Zuckerberg was far more scrutinized by the bloggers and journalists than Mr. Zuckerberg himself has been. As a CEO thus far, he avoids making news in his own interaction with media.
He does seem focused on the nuts and bolts of his operation, though. His job was the creation of Facebook, not the selling of it.
